A hen that forages is walking through parasite eggs and larvae every day. They sit in the soil for months, and every time she scratches through the dirt, pecks at a bug or works through the grass, she can pick up more.

Here is the part most keepers are never told: you do not have to see worms in the droppings for them to matter. A bird can carry a burden that is just large enough to drain her without ever looking obviously sick. No visible worms. No dramatic weight loss. No hen sitting in the corner. Just a slow, quiet decline in the thing you are watching most closely.

Producing an egg is one of the most expensive things a hen's body does. It takes protein, calcium, vitamins and energy, and all of it has to come from what she eats. If parasites are sitting in her gut taking those nutrients first, there is not enough left over to make an egg. Her body has to prioritise, and survival always comes before laying.
